There are five skills that scientists use, and they are used in the used in the Enigma Box activity. Those skills are observing, inferring, predicting, classifying, and making models. Observing is used by seeing what happens when the liquid pours into the box, and inferring when it pours out. But before that, predicting is used by guessing what will happen. Then you can make a model of what you think is inside, then classify the materials used for it.
During the demonstration of the Enigma Box, I observed many things. First, there were two holes at the top. One about thumb-sized, and the other about pin-sized. The box is about one foot tall. There is a tube coming out of the bottom, and the box is made of plexiglass. At about 250 ml's of liquid poured in it, it starts dripping, and at 500 ml's of liquid, it goes pouring out.
Inside the Enigma box, I thought that there were a series of platforms that at a certain weight, they open and the liquid comes out. When it's barely open, it just leaks. The first platform will hold some of it, then it opens, and it goes onto the next platform. At the bottom of the box, there is a funnel that the water goes through. There would be a funnel so no extra water is stuck inside.
What was actually happening inside the box was that a tube. When the liquid went inside, it was pushed up the tube. As the water keeps going through the tube, the air pushes it through by using pressure. Once the water was at the over flow point, it would flow out.
